Wildlife on Stey Braes
Over the years, viable populations of game have been introduced to the 2000 hectares game fenced on Stey Braes. There are more than a dozen species of antelope scattered among the surrounding hills, from the dainty Oribi to the majestic Eland, the iconic animal of the Drakensberg Mountains. The antelope enjoy a life of relative tranquillity on the grassy plains or high hills of the farm, with few natural predators – except, for the black-backed jackal or the lynx.
The other species finding their home on the undulating hills include Red and Black Hartebeest; Waterbuck; White Blesbuck; Springbuck; Impala; Zebra; and Gemsbuck. Indigenous herds of Mountain Reedbuck, Common Reedbuck, Rhebuck and Duiker join them under the dominating presence of Spioenkop, its highest point reaching 7 300ft.
